Camp Blanket Stories – Jonus 2002

Every camp blanket has stories to tell.  Pull up a log to the fire, wrap yourself up warm, and listen to one of mine…

Once upon a time, there was a group of friends.  They had met at university and discovered a mutual love of long walks and adventure.

One year, they decided to use some of the summer holiday to walk from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay.  It’s a long way.  192 miles, through the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and North York Moors.

The scenery is spectacular, and the walking was excellent.  The weather mostly behaved, and the friends were having a wonderful time.

Until one night, approaching their chosen campsite, they heard a distant noise.  The noise of many people gathered together.

The noise got louder and louder as they approached, and with sinking feeling they realised that the campsite was full.

What to do?

There were no other campsites in the area, and they were tired after a hard day’s walking.

Then one of the friends noticed a sign.

“Look! It’s a Scout and Guide camp!”

Quickly, a plot was hatched.  The friends approached the campsite and were challenged by a passing leader.  They explained their problem, and were directed to the camp organiser.

Of the five friends, three were Guides and one was a Scout.  The camp organiser was friendly – a true Scout – and welcomed them like the family they were.

A corner of the field was found, and the friends pitched their tent, as grateful as they were tired.

They were even given a badge each as a parting gift the next day.
